Description

The 74HC164D,653 is a high-speed, silicon-gate CMOS 8-bit Serial-in/Parallel-out Shift Register. This device features two serial data inputs (DSA and DSB) and eight fully buffered parallel outputs. Data is entered serially through one of the two inputs while the other serves as an active-HIGH enable input (when tied HIGH, the other input acts as a standard serial data entry point).

The shift register shifts data on the positive-going clock transition. It also includes an asynchronous master reset (MR) input that, when taken LOW, clears all registers and forces all outputs to a LOW state, regardless of the clock input. This IC is highly effective for serial-to-parallel data conversion, which is essential for reducing the number of I/O pins required by microcontrollers when driving displays or other multi-pin peripherals.
