Description

The MCP23017-E/SO is a high-performance 16-bit I/O expander that communicates via the I2C serial interface. It is designed to provide additional general-purpose input/output (GPIO) pins for microcontrollers that are limited in pin count. By using only two pins (SCL and SDA) on your microcontroller, you can gain control over 16 independent I/O pins, which can be configured as inputs, outputs, or interrupt sources.

The device features two 8-bit ports and includes programmable pull-up resistors and polarity inversion, allowing for maximum flexibility in hardware design. The MCP23017 is ideal for complex embedded systems requiring numerous sensors, switches, LEDs, or other digital peripherals. Its high-speed I2C interface supports clock frequencies up to 1.7 MHz, and the ability to configure up to eight unique I2C addresses means you can connect multiple MCP23017s to the same bus to control up to 128 I/O pins.

Housed in a SOIC-28 (SMD) package, this expander is perfect for modern PCB designs where board space is critical. It operates across a wide supply voltage range, making it compatible with both 3.3V and 5V logic systems. Its robust design and high current drive capability make it a staple in industrial, consumer, and hobbyist electronics.
