SPIDER Automation | 3S 8A Lithium-Ion Battery Protection Board | 11.1V 12.6V

The SPIDER Automation 3S 8A Lithium-Ion Battery Protection Board is a compact protection module designed for three-cell series-connected lithium-ion battery packs. It is intended for battery-powered equipment, including compatible handheld electric drill applications, where battery protection against specified electrical fault conditions is required.

The module incorporates overcharge and overcurrent protection functions, along with a specified low power-consumption characteristic. Its compact PCB construction allows integration into suitable battery-pack assemblies without requiring a large protection circuit.

The board is supplied in either blue or green PCB colour, depending on stock availability. The colour is shipped randomly and does not represent a selectable electrical variant.

Technical Features & Protection Functions

  • 3S Battery Protection: Designed for lithium-ion battery packs containing three cells connected in series.
  • Overcharge Protection: Monitors the cell voltage and provides overcharge protection at the specified detection threshold.
  • Operating Current Capability: Designed for battery-pack applications within its specified operating-current rating.
  • Transient Current Protection: Includes a higher transient-current threshold for protection against excessive current conditions.
  • Low Power Consumption: The specified power-flow consumption is below 30 µA, helping limit the board’s own battery drain.
  • Compact PCB Construction: Suitable for integration into compact battery-pack assemblies.

Battery Configuration & Charging Requirements

The board is designed for a 3S lithium-ion battery configuration, in which three individual cells are connected in series. This arrangement provides an 11.1V nominal pack voltage and reaches 12.6V when fully charged using conventional 4.2V-per-cell lithium-ion charging.

For charging, use a dedicated 12.6V CC/CV lithium-ion charger compatible with the battery pack. The protection board provides battery protection functions and should not be treated as a charging or voltage-regulation module.

Current Ratings & Electrical Operation

The module has a specified operating-current rating and a separate higher transient-current threshold. These values represent different operating conditions and should not be treated as interchangeable. Select the battery cells, wiring and connected equipment according to the actual operating and startup current requirements of the application.

  • Operating Current: The specified operating-current rating defines the intended normal current range for the protection board.
  • Transient Current: The higher transient-current threshold relates to short-duration current conditions and is not a continuous operating rating.
  • Battery Selection: Use cells with suitable discharge capability for the connected equipment.
  • Power Tool Compatibility: Motor startup and load conditions can produce current peaks; ensure the complete battery assembly is suitable for the tool’s actual current demand.

Applications

This protection board is intended for compatible 3S lithium-ion battery packs in compact battery-powered equipment and electronic assemblies.

  • Handheld Electric Drills: Battery protection for compatible drill battery-pack configurations.
  • Portable Power Tools: Suitable for compatible equipment using a 3S lithium-ion battery pack within the board’s current capability.
  • DIY Battery Packs: Can be integrated into custom three-cell series-connected lithium-ion battery assemblies.
  • Rechargeable Equipment: Intended for compatible rechargeable devices requiring a 3S battery protection circuit.
  • Portable Electronic Assemblies: Suitable for battery-powered projects designed around a 3S lithium-ion supply.

Connection & Operating Recommendations

For proper battery-pack operation, integrate the protection board with a correctly configured three-cell series battery assembly. The cell connections should follow the board’s designated connection points so that the protection circuit can monitor the individual cell voltages. Use suitable battery interconnections and wiring for the intended load, and charge the assembled pack with a compatible 12.6V CC/CV lithium-ion charger.

  • 3S Cell Arrangement: Connect three compatible lithium-ion cells in series to form the required battery-pack configuration.
  • Cell Connection Sequence: Connect the battery cells to the corresponding board terminals in the correct series order, following the PCB markings.
  • Load Integration: Connect the equipment through the designated output terminals provided on the board.
  • Current Selection: Match the battery-cell discharge capability and connected load requirements to the board’s operating-current rating.
  • Charging Method: Use a dedicated 12.6V CC/CV charger designed for a conventional 3S lithium-ion battery pack.
  • Power Tool Operation: Account for motor startup current and operating load when selecting the battery cells and assembling the pack.
  • Battery Maintenance: Use compatible cells with consistent specifications and replace damaged or degraded cells before assembling a battery pack.
