Description

The 74HC93 is a high-speed, silicon-gate CMOS 4-bit binary ripple counter. It is internally organized as a divide-by-two section and a divide-by-eight section. Because these sections are independent, the device is highly versatile, allowing for various counting modes depending on how you connect the external clock inputs (CP0 and CP1) and outputs (Q0–Q3).

The counter stages are triggered by the HIGH-to-LOW transition of the clock signal. Because it is a “ripple” counter, the output states do not change simultaneously; there is a slight delay as the signal propagates through each flip-flop. Consequently, decoded output signals may experience brief “spikes,” so it is generally recommended to avoid using raw decoded outputs as clock or strobe signals for other sensitive logic.
