Description
The 74HC594/74HCT594 is a high-speed 8-bit serial-in/serial or parallel-out shift register that integrates a dedicated storage register. This device is designed for versatile data manipulation, featuring separate clock and reset inputs for both the shift and storage registers. The presence of a serial output (Q7S) allows for easy cascading of multiple ICs to extend the bit length.
Data is shifted through the register on the LOW-to-HIGH transitions of the SHCP (Shift Clock) input. Subsequently, the data is transferred to the storage register on the LOW-to-HIGH transition of the STCP (Storage Clock) input. This separation allows the system to hold a stable parallel output state even while new data is being shifted into the primary register. If the clocks are tied together, the shift register operates exactly one clock pulse ahead of the storage register. The inputs include clamp diodes, permitting the use of current limiting resistors to interface with signals exceeding the supply voltage (VCC).
