Description

The 74HC154D,653 is a high-speed, silicon-gate CMOS 4-to-16 line decoder/demultiplexer. It decodes four binary-coded inputs (A0–A3) into one of sixteen mutually exclusive active-LOW outputs (Y0–Y15). This device is a powerful tool for complex address decoding, memory bank selection, or expanding a limited number of microcontroller output pins into a large array of individually addressable signals.

The IC features two active-LOW enable inputs ($E1$ and $E2$). For the decoder to function, both enable inputs must be driven LOW. If either enable input is driven HIGH, all sixteen outputs are forced to a HIGH state, effectively disabling the entire decoder. This design simplifies cascading, allowing designers to build larger decoders by using the enable pins as additional address lines.
