SPIDER Automation | MY1016Z2 24V 250W Geared Brushed DC E-Bike Motor Kit | Controller & Twist Throttle

Overview

The MY1016Z2 24V 250W Geared Brushed DC E-Bike Motor Kit is a motor-and-controller combination for DIY electric bicycle and compatible scooter conversion projects. It includes a permanent-magnet brushed DC motor, a matching 24V motor controller and a twist throttle assembly, providing the primary drive and speed-control components for a custom electric vehicle build.

The motor incorporates a 9.78:1 reduction gearbox and a 9-tooth drive sprocket designed for a 1/2-inch × 1/8-inch pitch chain. Its direct-drive configuration does not include a freewheeling mechanism. The motor supports forward and reverse rotation by reversing its power-wire polarity, subject to the controller’s wiring arrangement.

The motor is rated at 24V DC and 250W, with a supplier-listed rated current of 13.4A and efficiency of at least 78%. A compatible 24V battery and suitable battery charger are required separately.

Technical Features & Functional Characteristics

  • Permanent-Magnet Brushed DC Motor: MY1016Z2 motor design for compatible electric bicycle and scooter drive systems.
  • 250W Rated Power: Designed for 24V electric drive applications.
  • Integrated Gear Reduction: The 9.78:1 gearbox reduces motor rotational speed before mechanical output is transferred to the chain drive.
  • 9-Tooth Drive Sprocket: Provides the motor-side chain interface for the specified 1/2-inch × 1/8-inch pitch chain.
  • Direct-Drive Arrangement: The motor does not have a freewheeling mechanism, so the motor remains mechanically coupled to the drivetrain.
  • Forward and Reverse Operation: Motor rotation direction can be changed by reversing motor power-wire polarity, following the controller’s connection requirements.
  • Matched Motor Controller: Includes a controller intended for the MY1016Z2 250W brushed DC motor.
  • Twist Throttle Control: Includes a throttle assembly for handlebar-mounted motor control.
  • Dummy Grip Component: Includes the accompanying handlebar grip component.
  • Specified Operating Efficiency: Supplier-listed efficiency of at least 78%.

Motor & Gearbox Operation

The MY1016Z2 uses an integrated reduction gearbox to reduce the motor’s rotational speed and provide a geared output for mechanical transmission. The specified 9.78:1 reduction ratio is relevant when calculating the motor-side and driven-side speed relationship.

The motor’s direct-drive configuration does not provide a freewheeling function. Consequently, the mechanical drivetrain remains coupled to the motor rather than freely rotating independently of it. Consider this characteristic when designing the bicycle’s transmission and selecting the drivetrain arrangement.

The motor supports forward and reverse operation by changing the polarity of its power connections. Reversal should be performed according to the controller’s wiring documentation and the requirements of the complete drive system.

Chain Sprocket & Mechanical Compatibility

The motor is supplied with a 9-tooth sprocket specified for a 1/2-inch × 1/8-inch pitch chain. The supplier also provides chain roller dimensions, which are useful when selecting a mechanically compatible chain.

  • Motor Sprocket: 9 teeth.
  • Chain Pitch: 1/2 inch (12.7mm).
  • Chain Width: 1/8 inch nominal chain designation.
  • Roller Diameter: 0.3 inch.
  • Roller Width: 0.16 inch.

The chain, driven sprocket and motor sprocket must have matching pitch and compatible tooth profiles. Correct sprocket alignment and chain tension are important for smooth transmission and to avoid unnecessary mechanical loading.

Motor Controller & Electrical Configuration

The kit includes a 24V motor controller rated for the MY1016Z2 250W motor. The controller is intended to operate the supplied brushed DC motor and provides the electrical control stage between the battery, motor and throttle.

The controller is described as having connection provisions for the motor, accelerator, brake, battery, battery charging connection, brake light and power lock. These are controller connection provisions; the exact pin assignments, wire colours and connector layout must be taken from the applicable controller wiring diagram.

  • Motor Connection: Electrical connection for the supplied brushed DC motor.
  • Throttle Connection: Interface for the included twist throttle assembly.
  • Brake Connection: Controller provision for a compatible brake-control input.
  • Battery Connection: Connection to a suitable external 24V battery.
  • Charging Connection: Provision for a battery charging connection; the controller is not a battery charger.
  • Brake-Light Connection: Provision for a compatible brake-light circuit.
  • Power-Lock Connection: Interface for the controller’s power-lock arrangement.

Applications

  • DIY Electric Bicycle Projects: For custom bicycle drive systems using a 24V geared brushed DC motor.
  • Electric Scooter Builds: For compatible scooter projects with a suitable chain transmission and motor mounting arrangement.
  • Small Electric Vehicle Prototypes: For custom vehicle designs requiring a geared permanent-magnet DC motor.
  • Robotics & Mobile Platforms: For mobile platforms that can accommodate the motor’s voltage, power and mechanical drivetrain requirements.
  • Educational Engineering Projects: For practical study of brushed DC motor control, gearbox operation and chain transmission.
  • Custom Chain-Drive Systems: For compatible mechanical systems using the specified sprocket and chain arrangement.

Installation & Operating Recommendations

Install the MY1016Z2 motor and controller as a matched 24V brushed DC drive system. The direct-drive configuration and specified chain interface should be considered when planning the bicycle’s transmission, freewheel arrangement and operating behaviour.

  • Battery Selection: Use a compatible 24V battery with suitable current capability for the motor and controller. The battery is not included in this kit.
  • Controller Matching: Use the included 24V 250W brushed DC controller with the supplied motor. Do not substitute a brushless DC controller.
  • Chain Compatibility: Select a chain that matches the specified 1/2-inch pitch, 1/8-inch width designation and sprocket tooth profile.
  • Drivetrain Planning: Account for the 9.78:1 gearbox ratio and the direct-drive configuration when designing the chain transmission and freewheel arrangement.
  • Chain Alignment: Keep the motor sprocket and driven sprocket aligned to reduce chain wear and the risk of derailment.
  • Electrical Wiring: Follow the applicable controller wiring diagram for battery, motor, throttle, brake and accessory connections. Disconnect the battery before changing wiring.
  • Motor Direction: Change motor rotation only by following the controller’s wiring requirements and isolating the battery before modifying connections.
  • Throttle Installation: Secure the twist throttle and dummy grip on the handlebar with sufficient clearance for comfortable operation.
  • Initial Testing: Test the motor at low load and check throttle response, motor direction, chain movement and drivetrain alignment before regular operation.
  • Battery Charging: Use a charger matched to the battery chemistry and configuration. The controller’s charging connection provision does not mean a charger is included.
