Description
The MC74HC595 is a high-speed, silicon-gate CMOS 8-bit serial-in, parallel-out shift register. It features a storage register with 3-state outputs, making it the industry-standard choice for expanding the number of digital output pins on a microcontroller.
The device operates in two stages:
- Shift Register: Data is clocked in serially via the DS (Data Serial) pin on the rising edge of the SHCP (Shift Register Clock) pin.
- Storage (Latch) Register: Once 8 bits have been shifted in, a pulse on the STCP (Storage Clock) pin transfers the data from the shift register to the storage register, where it appears on the output pins (Q0–Q7).
The 3-state output feature allows you to disable the outputs (set to high-impedance) via the Output Enable (OE-bar) pin, which is particularly useful for bus-sharing applications.
