Description

The 74LS74 is a classic, high-speed dual D-type flip-flop containing two independent flip-flops in a single package. Each flip-flop features individual data (D) inputs, clock (CLK) inputs, and asynchronous PRESET (PRE) and CLEAR (CLR) inputs.

This device is “positive edge-triggered,” meaning the data present at the D input is transferred to the Q output only on the rising edge of the clock signal. The asynchronous PRESET and CLEAR pins allow you to force the flip-flop into a specific state (HIGH or LOW) regardless of the clock or data inputs, making this IC highly versatile for system initialization, state machines, and sequential logic design.

Features

  • Dual (2) independent D-type flip-flops
  • Positive edge-triggered clocking
  • Asynchronous PRESET and CLEAR inputs
  • Low-power Schottky (LS) TTL technology
  • Standard 14-pin DIP through-hole package

Benefits

  • Data Synchronization: Ideal for sampling and holding data at specific timing intervals.
  • Flexible State Control: Asynchronous inputs allow for easy system reset or preset functionality.
  • Reliable Logic: Edge-triggering reduces sensitivity to input noise compared to level-triggered latches.

Applications

  • Data Storage and Register Design
  • Frequency Division
  • Switch Debouncing Circuits
  • Control State Machines
  • Digital Signal Synchronization
