Description
The 74HC393 is a high-speed, silicon-gate CMOS Dual 4-bit Binary Ripple Counter. It consists of two independent 4-bit binary ripple counters in a single package. Each 4-bit section contains four master-slave flip-flops that are internally connected to provide a divide-by-2, divide-by-4, divide-by-8, and divide-by-16 operation.
The device is “ripple” because the output of one flip-flop acts as the clock for the next. Each section has an independent active-HIGH Master Reset (MR) input, which, when taken HIGH, clears all four flip-flops and sets the outputs to LOW, regardless of the clock input. This IC is a staple in digital systems for frequency division, event counting, and time-base generation.
