SPIDER Automation 5.8GHz 4-Leaf Clover RHCP Antenna | 3dBi Gain, RP-SMA Female | For FPV Video Systems

Description

The SPIDER Automation 5.8GHz 4-Leaf Clover RHCP Antenna is an omnidirectional circularly polarised antenna designed for FPV video transmission and reception systems operating in the 5.8GHz band. Its four-leaf clover configuration is intended to provide circular polarisation, helping reduce the effects of multipath interference that can occur when RF signals reflect from nearby surfaces and arrive at the receiving antenna through multiple paths.

The antenna uses Right-Hand Circular Polarisation (RHCP) and has a stated gain of 3dBi with a VSWR below 1.5. These characteristics make it suitable for compatible 5.8GHz FPV equipment where an omnidirectional antenna is preferred. For effective polarisation matching, the transmitting and receiving antennas should use the same polarisation type.

The mechanical design includes reinforcement around the cloverleaf base to improve resistance to handling-related damage. A separate lightweight protective cover is also included to shield the antenna wires during installation on a drone. The RP-SMA female connector provides the RF connection to compatible equipment fitted with an RP-SMA male interface.

Technical Features & Performance Characteristics

  • 5.8GHz RF Operation: Designed for the 5.8GHz frequency band commonly used by FPV video transmitters and receivers. The antenna should be paired with equipment configured for a compatible frequency within its intended operating band.
  • Four-Leaf Clover Geometry: The four-leaf structure is designed for circularly polarised operation, making it suitable for FPV systems where reflected signals can otherwise contribute to video interference.
  • Right-Hand Circular Polarisation: RHCP describes the direction of circular polarisation. Matching RHCP antennas at both ends of the link helps maintain polarisation compatibility and improve rejection of oppositely polarised reflected signals.
  • 3dBi Gain: The stated gain characterises the antenna’s directional performance relative to an isotropic reference. It should be considered alongside the antenna’s omnidirectional coverage pattern and the requirements of the installation.
  • VSWR Below 1.5: The specified Voltage Standing Wave Ratio indicates a relatively low impedance mismatch, helping limit reflected RF power when the antenna is connected to a suitably matched 5.8GHz system.
  • Omnidirectional Radiation: Designed to provide coverage around the antenna, reducing the need for continuous directional alignment during aircraft movement.
  • Reinforced Cloverleaf Base: Additional reinforcement around the antenna base helps protect the structure from unwanted physical damage during installation and normal handling.
  • Protective Top Cover: The included lightweight cover protects the antenna wire elements during drone installation while keeping additional mass low.

RF Polarisation & System Compatibility

Circular polarisation is particularly useful in FPV video links because signals can reflect from the ground, buildings, trees and other nearby objects before reaching the receiving antenna. These reflected signals may arrive with altered polarisation and phase, potentially contributing to multipath interference and unstable video reception.

The RHCP configuration is intended to help reject signals with the opposite circular polarisation. For the intended polarisation benefit, the antenna at the receiving end should also be RHCP. Using an RHCP antenna at one end and an LHCP antenna at the other can introduce substantial polarisation mismatch and is generally unsuitable for a conventional matched FPV video link.

The antenna is intended for compatible 5.8GHz AV transmitters and receivers. Connector compatibility must also be checked: this antenna has an RP-SMA female connector and requires an RP-SMA male mating interface on the connected equipment or cable.

Connector & Installation Design

The RP-SMA female connector provides the mechanical and electrical interface for attaching the antenna to a compatible RF port. RP-SMA and standard SMA connectors are not interchangeable in every configuration, so the connector type should be verified before installation.

The reinforced cloverleaf base is designed to reduce the likelihood of damage to the antenna structure during handling. The supplied protective cover fits over the upper antenna section to help shield the wire elements during installation. The antenna should be mounted securely without bending, crushing or placing unnecessary stress on the cloverleaf structure.

Applications

This antenna is intended for 5.8GHz FPV video systems that require circularly polarised omnidirectional RF coverage and a compatible RP-SMA connection.

  • FPV Multicopters: Antenna installation on compatible multirotor aircraft using 5.8GHz video transmission systems.
  • FPV Video Transmitters: RF output antenna for compatible 5.8GHz video transmitters with RP-SMA male ports.
  • FPV Video Receivers: Receiving antenna for compatible 5.8GHz receivers configured for RHCP polarisation.
  • Drone Video Links: Circularly polarised antenna integration for compatible drone-based video communication systems.
  • Omnidirectional FPV Setups: Applications where coverage around the antenna is preferred over a highly directional antenna arrangement.
  • Multipath-Prone Environments: FPV installations where circular polarisation can help reduce interference from reflected RF signals.
  • FPV Racing Platforms: Antenna integration for compatible 5.8GHz video systems used in racing aircraft.
  • FPV Freestyle Aircraft: Suitable for compatible video systems where aircraft orientation changes frequently during flight.

Connection & Operating Recommendations

Correct RF connection and antenna positioning are important for maintaining the intended performance of a 5.8GHz FPV video link. Before operation, verify the connector, polarisation and frequency compatibility of the complete transmitter-to-receiver system.

  • Confirm Connector Type: Check that the equipment has a matching RP-SMA male connection before attaching the antenna. Do not force incompatible SMA or RP-SMA connectors together.
  • Match Polarisation: Use an RHCP antenna at the opposite end of the link to maintain the intended polarisation match.
  • Verify Frequency: Ensure the transmitter and receiver operate on compatible frequencies within the 5.8GHz band.
  • Protect the Antenna Elements: Install the supplied cover carefully and avoid bending or crushing the cloverleaf wires.
  • Secure the Antenna: Ensure the antenna is mechanically supported and that its connector is not exposed to excessive vibration or pulling force.
  • Avoid Obstructions: Position the antenna away from large conductive structures and other components that may obstruct or detune the RF installation.
  • Check the RF Link: Verify video reception and link quality after installation before normal operation.
